Chronic Back Pain Treatment - Here’s What You Need To Know

without comments

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

can run the gamut of prescription and non-prescription (OTC) type medications. The challenge with combining all of these medications is that they often have different therapeutic effects and they may last different amounts of time.

You should do one big thing to ensure that your doctor knows exactly what to do with you. Typically when you see a new doctor for back pain, they will ask you all types of questions. They will question you so thoroughly because getting you on the wrong type of treatment or diagnosis is really a bad situation. Some people get medical mix ups at the pharmacy and die. Oprah did a show documenting the massive amount of medical mishaps. Everything from the absolute wrong prescription for a given person who was allergic to the medication to the wrong strengths of medications. Her reported number of deaths due to this was to the tune of 150,000 each year. That is huge.

When you see your doctor make sure that you disclose to her your use of herbal medications. I know, you think that the all natural stuff is really not medication. But in reality it is. Sometimes patients like you in chronic back pain are quick to discount what you’ve tried. Don’t do this because you may still be using that all natural product and it may interact with the prescription the doctor orders for you.

Next, you must ensure that you tell your physician about taking any OTC medications. Over-the-counter medications you can readily get from the pharmacy without needing a doctors prescription. Once again the problem is that many people think it is no big deal to skip adding that to the doctors questions. A problem occurs and wow, you are in the hospital or worse yet, you become one of the 150,000 Oprah reported on.

Aleve is an OTC medication that fits into the class of a Non-Steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. NSAIDS are available by prescription and by OTC. The Aleve brand can be very effective but you might have to take a larger dose of it to get the chronic back pain treatment relief you want most. Taking larger doses of these drugs can be problematic to your stomach lining, so take precautions and avoid super high doses of it.

Anticonvulsants is another commonly used product for treating back pain. But in reality it probably is used more for relief of seizures. Senator Ted Kennedy had a seizure recently at the Inauguration of Barak Obama and was rushed to the hospital. He has been battling cancer for some time now. We wish Mr. Kennedy the best of good health.

Opiods are another very popular chronic back pain treatment. These include oxycodone, codeine and morphine. These substances should be acquired only from doctors. They have a very addictive quality to them. Patients must be cautions because they are so powerful. You’ll feel the relief from the chronic pain you are experiencing and that is what makes them so effective that people get hooked on them.

These are just a few of the options for chronic back pain treatment but another article will deal with the plethora of alternative treatments as well.

Our health is so important. When you get a chance, NO, why not take the time now to check out our free back exercise treatment guide today. You have nothing to lose but the pain from chronic back pain.

Should You Take This Pain In Lower Back Quiz?

without comments

has you down? Not to worry. You are like millions of other people in the world today with this problem. One of the most troubling things about back pain is that when it happens to you automatically you feel alone. But the fact of the matter is that you are in the majority. That is at some point or another most human beings will have back pain.

Your biggest challenge today is humbling yourself enough to consider it serious enough to warrant seeing a doctor. Now I am not going to debate just what type of doctor you should see. But when I had pain in lower back one morning. I drove around for five (5) hours trying to get my nerve up to go see someone.

My mother had been a long term patient of a chiropractor and had experienced great results. But the problem was she had to keep going back to him or she would lose her relief. This troubled me because even though I have good health insurance, the insurances don’t like to pay for stuff like that. It’s as though they consider it to be minor or cosmetic. But it wasn’t because I was in pain. I couldn’t even turn my head to the left to look over my shoulder to change lanes while driving. This was a BIG problem because in my job I drive all day long. Urhhh!

After seeing the chiropractor he worked on me ONLY after he called the insurance company personally to see if they would cover my visit. I had cash in my pocket to pay if they didn’t but he checked it out anyway. Even though they said yes right then, they changed their minds when the bill came due and that started a dispute that I’d hate to think about today.

I paid personally with pain and suffering and aggravation. Not to mention the redundant administration I had to get from the chiropractor to prove my case. What a waste.

The doctor did take x-rays to determine if there was some skeletal defect but those proved positive. She would probably do the same for you. This is an important first step on the road to getting well. After coming up with the findings and taking the time for twice or three time a week visits, I was all better after about twelve (12) weeks.

Each time I went to the office was a $30 co-pay. And then the insurance company still denied the claims. I share all of this here with you so that you can be prepared for what you need to do as you go into the doctors office. If you don’t have insurance and the pain in lower back is a real problem you probably need to bite the bullet and invest in your health. That is the only way to get well.

Simple Upper Back Pain Exercise Steps To Ease Your Pain and Stiffness

without comments

If you are suffering from upper back pain you can benefit from these simple suggestions. These are exercises that are intended for you to do after you consult with your doctor or a physical therapist. Though many of our readers often try them out before getting advice from those professionals. Either way it is for you to decide.

Since the amount of co-payments to doctors and the referral services to a physical therapist may not be in everyone’s budgets, you can use these as supplemental or primary activities. Of interest you should also search online for back pain exercises. You might even find some video demonstrations on the video sites. Hmm, I think we’ll add a section to our blog featuring such exercise videos you can do right now.

But for now understand that millions of people just like you are suffering from upper or lower back pain. So the exercise options presented here can be used to build better posture. You see, posture often is the number one reason why people experience back pain in the first place. But akin to it are those that do exercise however they do not take the time to limber up and get the muscles warmed up before making demands upon them to work.

I am doing a very powerful exercise routine called P90X by Beach Body Fitness featuring exercise expert Tony Horton. Tony believes in warming up and avoiding the problems that many people complain about everyday in doctors office the world over, “Doctor I’ve got major back pain, can’t sleep at night, can’t go to work, my boss is on my case…” and so on.

One solutions I have is avoiding or preventing the pain from occurring in the first place. You can do this by following along and printing out these exercise suggestions.

The first is a pectoral stretch called love yourself hugs. The pecs are those muscles across your chest. In order to get them limbered up you could stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Begin swinging your arms so that the wrap around your body. You start slowly at first, then increase the speed as you warm up. You can do about twenty five repetitions and you should feel warm.

Next you can move into the helicopter stretch. Now once again all of these stretches are meant to target your muscles that you use in upper back pain exercise movements. The helicopter requires you to stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Now once in this posture begin swinging your arms backwards at the same time or you can alternate one at a time. The idea here is to warm up those deltoid’s and shoulder blade muscles. This improves your posture with time and the number of repetitions you do. I suggest you start at twenty (20) forward then reverse for another twenty (20).

The final upper back pain exercise suggestion is that of arm extensions. You stand in any doorway so that you can lean against the door. With your back against the door, raise your arms up and down slowly. This motion stretches the upper back muscles. Once they get in shape you will be on your way to never feeling the pain of upper back pain again.
Try to do at least fifteen (15) slowly and never fast. Going fast just invites the possibility of injury.

As you can see in order to prevent or work with the upper back pain exercise requires you to take just a few moments per day to do these exercises. Once you get the hang of them you won’t even need to look at this printed article. You can even do them as a break while working at your computer. Why not? If people can take smoke breaks all day, why shouldn’t you be allowed to take a stretching break. If you do you’ll find that you’ll be less tired, and far more productive because of the investment you made in yourself.

The Truth About Chronic Upper Back Pain - Is it less commonly experienced but just as painful?

without comments

is a problem that many of you are dealing with. When you visit the doctor, she will seek to understand and diagnose your back pain. Two varieties of back pain and the treatment may be different for both. The first is acute back pain. You will know whether you have chronic or acute back pain due to the length of time it affects you.

If your back pain lasts for up to ninety (90) days your back pain passes from being acute (short term) to a chronic back pain condition. You probably already know this, but chronic back pain and acute often are just as painful. It just depends upon your pain threshold and whether you are doing anything to relieve yourself of the pain.

As your physician attempts to diagnose your condition, you will get questions meant to help her understand if the irritation in your muscles is caused by a lack of activity or if it is something to do with your joints, ligaments and muscles.  If your joints are malfunctioning it may occur around the ribs and upper back that becomes strained and ultimately experiences injury.

If you have lived a good while on earth it is possible that your chronic upper back pain may be due to the disks that have herniated or ruptured. Don’t really WORRY about this because it only occurs in one (1%) percent of the population. So, the chances that this has happened to you are very unlikely.

If you find that you have injured your back and you are tired of the chronic upper back pain what type of treatments could  benefit you most?
* Chiropractic care
* Physical therapy
* Acupuncture
* Deep muscle medical massage
* Exercise to strengthen the muscles of your overall body and your back (see physician first before beginning any exercise plan)

Unfortunately, all of these measures may not be enough for you. In that case your doctor may resort to prescription drug based pain relievers or muscle relaxers. It is important to note that these medication are still very effective but they also pack a rather severe potential to become addicted to them. You should use this as your last ditch effort at best. Or at least only get them from physicians familiar with your case. Do not order them online from some internet pharmacy without getting proper care from a physician that can examine you and your case first.

Losing Sleep Due To Back Pain? Use These Exercises to Prevent Back Pain

without comments

Doing is a wise and prudent thing to do. You should do these exercises just to remain healthy and fit. Once your back pain flares up you’ll be unable to do the things you love doing. No more boating or fishing. No more bowling to. Some people cannot engage in sexual relations due to back pain also. How dreadful would that be?

If you’ve been virtually back pain free don’t look the other way to long. Studies show that many people will increase their risk of back pain simply as a result of aging. But is it really aging or is it do to a lack of flexibility and agility? Follow along with these exercises and get going today. In fact, why not print out this article and do them along with your reading? This would be the best way to get started. Now if you’ve got a medical condition you need to always consult with a physician before beginning any exercise program.

If you were to look at your body, the muscles in your thighs, back and around your mid section make up what is called the “CORE”. Your core is involved in virtually everything you do. You cannot lift a ladder or bake a cake without using your CORE. So you have to keep these muscles in condition so that when they are called upon for work, they will be ready. And not a day goes by that they are not in use.

The first exercise is that of doing leg raises. These were quite popular back when I was in the Army. This simple movement can be one of the right exercises to prevent back pain.

Don’t believe me? Give it a try.

I dare you to lie on your back with your hands flat to your sides for balance. Now lift both of your legs up about two (2) feet off the ground. Strive to hold your stomach muscles in as you do this. Hold this position for thirty (30) seconds. And repeat this for about five (5) sets two or three times a day. You’ll immediately begin to feel the effects upon your body. Your results are yours and yours alone, so do not cheat and hold your legs up for five (5) seconds and quit.

Now if five (5) seconds is all you can do to start, then start right where you are. But you should seek to move that time up while keeping the proper form as described above.

Next, you can do an upright back stretch in order to use exercises to prevent back pain. You are in a standing posture with your feet approximately shoulder width apart. Your hands are in the small of your back like in “Parade Rest” ( more Army postures) for support of your back. Now slowly and gently bend yourself backwards without bending your knees. Doing this is easy and quick but do not get careless and have poor posture. When you do have poor posture that is a quick invitation to back pain. Now bend forward and relax.

You should build up to doing about 5 sets of these. The whole idea here is to get you moving and to relieve yourself of some of the pressure from the back pain you can experience.

Lastly, you can get on all fours on the floor. That is you are on your hands and knees. Now look straight ahead of you and slowly stretch your back by arching it like a cat. This Cat stretch will target the same areas as the other exercises to prevent back pain. But now you will use this movement last because it seeks to stretch the other muscles and gives you a calming effect.

There are many other easy exercises that you can use to prevent back pain. Just do a Google search online or ask your doctor or physical therapist for information, charts, and exercise examples that you could do while you watch T.V.

How To Use Back Pain Alternative Treatment Plans for Maximum Results

without comments

How to use plans is a question that many of you have on your minds. Judging from the results reported in the Journal Of American Medicine, back pain is one of the most often asked questions when patients come in to see their doctors.

Tons of people are in pain and wonder if “alternative treatments” can help them. Absolutely YES!

By definition, a back pain alternative treatment is considered so because the medical community deems it so. In other parts of the world, Europe, Asia, Canada and others, they consider the treatments revealed here to be more mainstream. And the results speak for themselves.

There are many back pain alternative treatments available. Consider first that of the profession of chiropractic manipulations. The Doctors of Osteopathic medicine also have a type of manipulations. It is called Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy. Both the Chiropractors and some DO’s virtually do the same thing. That is they manipulate the spine so as to relieve the undesirable pressure that is pinching nerves or something worse.

The starting point as far as with a D.O. or a Chiropractor is to take an x-ray of the spine. This is so basic but countless cases are not starting with this very basic diagnostic tool. By taking an x-ray you and your provider can see what may be causing your pain. This is done also to rule out other potential problems for your back pain.

It does not matter if it’s lower back pain or upper back pain, you really should start off with a good doctor visit before attempting any back pain alternative treatment.

If you are not afraid of needles, the next alternative treatment for your consideration is that of acupuncture. This is second to the spine manipulations above. But the results are very strong. The use of acupuncture to address chronic back pain has been around for centuries.

Some naysayers suggest that this is just placebo effect or sugar pill medicine. I just don’t know how you can refute thousands of years of medical history. The Chinese are way ahead of North Americans when it comes to acupuncture. But maybe not for long. With the advent of Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), many policy holders are taking control of their health and trying the “alternatives” listed here.

And you cannot blame them. With the chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, COPD, cancer all pummeling people left and right, YOU have absolutely nothing to lose by trying out a back pain alternative treatment.

How To Get Lower Back Pain Relief

without comments

Everyone wants to know just how to get rid of . Well, in this article we will give you a few working solutions that have helped thousands of people throughout he years.

You see, if you suffer from or just regular lower back pain you are not in the minority. In fact, recent evidence shows that you are in the majority. That is the most complained about problem that primary care physicians hear everyday has to do with back pain.

For some it is upper back pain others its hip and lower back pain. You sort of wonder just how we got on many years ago when there were no co-pays, office visits, back rehabilitation specialists and physical therapists. These are all parts of the modern health care system. It is big. It is growing and as you can see by the political commentators like Tom Brokaw, health care and the lack of it being affordable is a major issue for the next President of the United States to grapple with.

Getting appropriate treatment for your lower back pain will likely be one of the best decisions you can make. You should strive to see a physician sooner rather than later. The reason being is that some other health conditions to present or show signs or symptoms with back pain. So, the physician can perform a differential diagnosis on you and hopefully find out with certainty how to make you well again. At least this is the goal she has like many other good doctors.

Without this treatment you are really handicapping yourself. You could have a blood infection that is being circulated around your body. When it decides to cause symptoms some of them may be lower back pain stiffness or sore joints. Who knows. The point is that the first step to getting well again is seek out a licensed physician and work together with her on your team.

Her first item of business is to diagnose you back pain. She will likely seek a complete blood test, x-rays, and consult specialists if that is necessary. Determining if you’ve had any fractures or muscle sprains is also important because they can be clearly revealed on the x-ray more often than not.

This is just the beginning steps of working with your physician. You also need some from of treatment and she can assist you in targeting relevant treatment goals to strive for. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Your doctors job is to assist you in understanding what your problems really are and of course show you how to get well.

So many times we take for granted just how skilled our doctors can be. But the sad truth is that your getting well and overcoming your lower back pain will really depend upon YOU.

YOUR willingness to follow her treatment suggestions etc. That is all they are “suggestion”. The plan here is for you to accept responsibility for your own healing and you’ll find that your body will heal much quicker because you have a vested interest in seeing it do so.

Chronic Back Pain Treatment Medicinal Tip Sheet

without comments

When it comes to plans many of them rely a little to heavily upon medicines. Usually you will see your primary care physician after going to the emergency room doctor for your abrupt back pain. The ER doctor though well intentioned should not prescribe medications that the primary care doctor does not know about. I know this is controversial but stay with me here for a while.

Many times when you see the ER physician it is for an emergency or urgent care type visit. Since over 44 million people in the United States do not have health insurance there is an increasing number of patients that use the ER as a primary care doctor.

The laws on the books in most states require any patient visiting an ER hospital to be seen by a doctor. So, the ER cannot get around seeing patients that are in need. Even is you fail to pay your medical bills. After all human life is very important but at what cost?

If you fail to disclose to the ER doctor that you are on certain herbal medicines like St John’s Wort for example that could be very problematic. St John’s Wort is an herbal product Hypericum perforatum (chemical name). This agent has been now known to interact with a number of medications. Some of which you may be using right now.

Do you take any of these medicines:
• anticonvulsants (carbamazepine, phenobarbitone, phenytoin)
• ciclosporin
• digoxin
• HIV protease inhibitors (indinavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir)
• HIV non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (efavirenz, nevirapine)
• oral contraceptives
• selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (citalopram, fluoxetine,
fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline)
• theophylline
• triptans (sumatriptan, naratriptan, rizatriptan, zolmitriptan)
• warfarin

That is a rather comprehensive list you should look at whatever prescription your doctor has you on and look back at this list to see what is the potential there.

If you take your birth control pill and it does not work, most couples would be put off by the “unexpected” or “oops baby”. But then again some would also welcome having triplets even though they were on birth control pills. That is the problem with drug to drug interactions. The worse would be if the child was deformed or came out physically challenged.
So, knowing this information and what your doctor recommends for your chronic back pain treatment is very important.

You may be put on anticonvulsants to control your back pain that does not go away. Whatever it is you need to be a willing and involved patient in your treatment plan.

In all fairness, St John’s wort is a very effective non prescription type of depression treatment. It is commonly used for mild to moderate depression. Many of you that are suffering from chronic back pain and cannot sleep, work or do the things you used to do may find yourself depressed. This is easy to do. Try staying home all day instead of mixing and mingling with customers and work associates the way you used to do. Most people will get depressed just from that alone.

Ways to Treat Chronic Back Pain

Back pain is a pretty common thing for us.  Supposedly it’s because humans have only been standing on two feet for a fraction of their evolution, so our backs aren’t really made to support our entire weight…  But for whatever reason, many of us have a very real need for back pain treatment information.

There are many different things you can do to strengthen your back muscles, reduce stress and tension, and ease back pain.  Here is some information on pain management and other methods you can use.

  • Yoga – Yoga is a great way to keep your entire body limber, prevent injuries, and reduce muscle tension (one of the biggest causes of back pain).  People who practice yoga regularly report much better physical and mental health as a result.
  • Chiropractics – A chiropractor is someone who cracks your back to make minute adjustments in the alignment of your spine.  Problems with the alignment can create all kinds of tension and aches, so a chiropractor can improve many back problems in just a short visit.
  • Magnetic healing Mixing magnets and medicine also has the ability to reduce or even eliminate back pain.  Basically, a focused magnetic form stops the transmission of the pain signal between the inflamed nerve and the brain, making it so that you don’t feel the pain anymore.

There are many alternative treatments for back pain that can do you a lot of good, both physically and mentally, without the risks or side effects of drugs and surgeries.  It is definitely worth looking into, I think!

Back Pain Alternative Treatment - Which Ones Work The Best?

without comments

issues have pushed patients in need to try the less conventional route. Perhaps due to your weak heart you are not a candidate for back surgery. Whatever the reason you will find some solutions to your back problem in this post.

The first of the top alternatives is that of seeing a chiropractic physician. These doctors are highly skilled at diagnosing and treating various back problems. Where the profession started to get a black eye was when some of the doctors attempted to use manipulation to “cure” asthma, COPD, allergies and virtually anything that most medical doctors would treat.

Not only that but add in a few bad chiropractors who tried to get you on supplements, vitamins, minerals and Emu oil and it just degraded the profession. The truth is that not all doctors are this way. Many now recognize the benefit of complementing tradition medicine.

Going natural first is usually a good sign. Reason being is that the naturopathic medicines are often not associated with the potential adverse events that occur with tradition drug therapy.

You should always get an x-ray of the problematic region first. This is just good medical practice that will aid the doctor in ruling out any lesions on the spine and other less visible problems before you get into treatment considerations.

If you ever have numbness or a neurological condition you should not subscribe to the manipulations.

Acupuncture Is Worth Trying Out?

Next we have acupuncture. This back pain alternative treatment has been around for centuries. In fact it often predates Western medicine. There are a number of instances, far to many to count where acupuncture was the “cure” or ‘fix” for back pain and a host of other maladies.

Getting a medical massage is the third alternative treatment. Calling it an alternative is not a bad word. Unfortunately, western medicine appears superior to these alternatives. But what has it gotten us? In the United States alone with Western medicine, 84% of patients visiting their primary care doctor complained of back pain.

COPD is the 4th leading cause of death. Diabetes is at an epidemic levels according to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta Georgia. Obesity afflicts 64% of all U.S. adults. This was all done under Western Medical treatments. This seems to be a wake up call that something is not working.

Massage is the third back pain alternative treatment for your consideration. When your back is “out” of socket or if you are having muscle spasms and such, this will be so relieving that you’d wonder why you had not tried this any sooner.
Massage doesn’t have to be expensive. At a marriage retreat last weekend, during our recreation time, massage was offered. The rates were reasonable. $25 for one half hour.

The final back pain alternative treatment is that of getting some back exercises. They can be gathered online from various places. But for a limited time you can send an email below to find a compendium of back pain exercises we’ve compiled for your relief. Let us know if you have any questions. Enjoy!
